Hasslefree Miniatures

Hoi,

Because we all suffer from the Miniature Butterfly Effect now and again I have bought some Hasslefree Miniatures over the recent weeks. In two separate orders I received some very nice miniatures of which more will be revealed in due time.

For today's post it will suffice to say that the first order was rather delayed and the nice people over at HF mini's included a free miniature in the form of Rennie.

While I would never have chosen this figure myself, I decided to paint it up as a tester to get a feeling for this particular fine way of sculpting. Studying the mini before deciding the colour scheme it appeared to me this could just be a female version of our old little pall Asterix... so hence this paintjob.

The base is from Micro Art and I am still in dubio as to whether I will add flock or not.

Let the Games begin...

Hoi,

If you have followed this blog for some time, you'll know I indulge myself in painting 28mm figures now and again. While I am not into Ancients as such I do have a small collection of Gladiators and these two figures here form the latest additions to said mini-collection (pun intended). These are from Bronze Age miniatures and I believe they depict a Murmillo and a Secutor but I could be wrong. At present I have 3 small teams of fighters, each team has it's own colour (white, blue and red) to distinguish itself from the others. The fighters you see before you are reinforcing the blues and the reds.

The Murmillo

The Secutor

The Great War Centennial Part I

Hoi,

Some time ago I obtained the new HäT  WW1 German wagon set and here I present the vignette I created with it. The field kitchen or Goulash Kanone is from the now OOP Fine Scale Factory.
Figures are mainly HäT with some Revell and EMHAR figs added to complement them.

Feels like Boxing Day!

Hoi,

Remember me telling you that I was going to start a new 28mm plastics project? Well today a big box from Northstar http://www.northstarfigures.com/ arrived filled to the brim with nice and shiny new toys, do I feel like a young boy on Boxing Day or what!

The package contained 4 boxed sets of Ancient Greeks:

The boxed sets pictured here are: 1 Ancient Greek Hoplites, 2 Classic Greek Hoplites and 3 Spartan Hoplites. "That's only 3 boxes, where's the other one?" I hear you say, well it will just have to remain a secret until I get it finished. If you fancy a guess, go ahead and post it in a comment perhaps I'll let you in on the little secret when you guess it right.

For all people not interested in Ancient History (pun intended) here are some pictures of my two Revell Sopwith Camel biplanes. I love these little rascals. These Biplane kits are about the only kits I can put together with some decent result. And each and every one of them had an unique colour-scheme at that!  Just you wait till I have time to do my Albatrosses!

Female hoplite, warning: adult-ish content

Hoi,

Well, Paul's post recently reminded me of the fact that I too had one of these nice ladies lying around. Just like Paul I do not fancy the angel wings and besides no clear way of attaching them was provided so I decided to leave them off. Yet without them I needed some more parts to paint and create a decent focal point, yeah I know loads of corny jokes about there being rather too much focal points on this mini anyway, but I'm not gonna make them.

So I added a Zvezda Hoplon and a HäT gladius to create my version of the Greek Goddess of Athena, or any other suitable Greek fighting lady. I'm sorry the pictures are a bit fuzzy but perhaps that's just for the best right?

Army Showcase Part III: Assyrian Army

Hoi,

For this Army Showcase I decided to take my oldest finished historical wargames army. Oldest in both chronological-  as in actual sense. I put this together for some games of WAB but haven't used it in about 8 years...

High time they should come out of the showcase right?

The army:

A block of regular infantry and allied infantry, I love the look of those massive shields

Tribal Skirmishers

Regular missile, I actually have a few more of these but they didn't fit the picture right.

Line Cavalry

Guard Cavalry, I am also doing a Guard Infantry regiment but it has been sidelined for other projects for quite some time now...

The general in his Chariot, I also have a King and chariot waiting behind the screens but he's got sidelined as well.

All HäT figures of course.

Ho ho hoplites!

Hoi,

Okay that's a corny title for today's update but it's just one of them days... Feeling a bit under the weather and I've just bunged up the decal on the shield of the hoplite below. Here are the first testers for my 28mm Ancient
Greeks.

First up is a picture of the piper and one finished hoplite

Next up: 3 more shots of the hoplite on his own

I am not satisfied by far, the base is off, the shield decal is rubbish and I missed a line on the helmet (which I have corrected on the model already). Well anyway that's what we have test-figures for.

A big step forward...

...or is it backwards?

Whether you like or dislike the 28mm scale figures, I have some pictures of my very first 28mm plastic Greeks for you. I have put together a unit of Classical Greek Hoplites from a kit made by Immortal Miniatures http://www.immortalminiatures.com/ The kits are tremendous fun and go together very well. I have all 3 different boxed sets. Each one presents you with a certain amount of basic sprues which are in every box and then some sprues with conversion parts to give that extra flavour to your troops. Also included in the box are a booklet with lots of useful information, a sprue with plastic bases and a sheet of decals for your shield-designs, very good value for your money.

For aesthetic reasons I chose to mount the figures on GW regimental and 25x25mm bases. The arms with shields I have fixed to wire in order to get to the figure better when painting.

Moritori Nullumus Mori II

Hoi,

Last Update I promised you pictures of my Foundry Roman Gladiators. Well they're done now and here they are. Before we take a closer look I have to make some comments of things I'll do different next time. The base sizes differ because I've painted the African gladiator separately from the rest and placed him on a smaller base. The wounded guy is on a round base since he wouldn't fit on a square one, this also gave me the option of adding a shield as added interest on the base. Now I know there would probably be no grass in the arena but the bases were really bare and so I added the grass to break up the empty space.

The idea behind the colour schemes is that they are paired off in 3 different colours: 2 blues, 2 whites and 2 reds. Either they're from 3 different lanista's or one lanista has divided the gladiators from his ludus in 3 teams. The shield designs are more personal to depict the gladiators own preferences.
To me these chaps turned out to be a test of skin-tone painting skills. I think I partly succeeded; both the blue gladiators turned out okay, the others which I tried to give a more Mediterranean skin-tone turned out too light.

Given all that I'm pretty contend with their overall appearance, so without further ado here they are!

A group-shot:

The Blues: an African- and Germanic Tribesman

The Reds, my personal favourites due to their armour and the shield.

The whites.

Hoi,

Finally, another update! I've been terribly busy with all kinds of stuff not hobby related. Today I found a little time to finish off one of the little projects I had lying around being some Foundry Roman Gladiators

Punic War Romans

These Republican Romans by Zvezda were standing in my cabinet for ages and over the holidays I finally had time to paint them.
