Heroquest!

Hoi,

There's no better end to the year than a regular review, I am saving that for tomorrow. Okay to be honest there are far better ends to any year, but as far as the hobby goes a review in which you can look back to goals achieved and ones to look forward to is pretty nice.

Noble son number 1 Arthur thinking about his next move

That said, this post will, yet again, concern itself with Heroquest or HQ for short. Somehow this little game sparked something in me. Whether it is my inner child that is chuffed to bits with being able to find a decent use for all those long forgotten minis lying around around, or the gamer in me that rejoices about at least 1 game a week at the school club.
Or even the collector, who is eagerly searching the net for bargains of Oldhammer figures to be used or the rare "true" HQ find like the illusive extensions. It seems that many gamers have been lucky finding the extensions in second hand shops in the UK. Well no-go for me! We do have those shops but there are no HQ games to be found there. So what? I hear you think, weeeell while you can download pretty much all the paper content of any thinkable extension for the game, it does not beat the feel of the original box and the figures in your hands. At this moment I am the proud owner of:
- 2 basic boxed games (the game-system) 1 at home and 1 at school.
- 1 Kellar's Keep extension
- 1 Return of the Witchking extension
- 1 Wizards of  Morcar extension
- 1 Advanced Heroquest box set
- 2 x half box of classic Warhammer Quest

So yeah I would really like to get my grubby paws on any of the other extensions like Against the Ogre Hordes or the Barbarian- or Elf Quest packs. The prices those seem to go around for are ridiculous, go to Ebay and look for yourself. There are boxes tagged for $1200,- and I even saw a HQ stickeralbum go by, for which $5000,- was asked...that is waaaay beyond me to be sure!

Now on Friday December 22nd I hosted a major game at the school club for the pupils to enhance their characters and for me to try the rules out at a more skirmish- and out-of-the-Dungeon level. We have two "fellowships" at the club, one which we jokingly call the "Young Hounds" and the other, erm well... the "Old Dogs". Both were now playing on the same table with a more regular wargame scenic lay-out.

I had prepared briefings with personal goals and background stories for each member.

And yes I have Lord Kitchener and Lord Vader hanging next to each other in my classroom ;-)  To recount the entire story that was played out and explain all outcomes would take too long so I won't do that here, but I do have some impressions of the game in progress. I didn't have much time to take many pics, what with trying to DM 8 people in at least 3 locations at once, but hey here they are.

The rules were basically those of the main game-system with some additions and small changes like instead of rolling 2d6 to see how many squares you can walk you now roll and walk that many inches. Simple enough.

So what did the adventurers gain in this Christmas Quest?
Well first up, everyone was awarded 10 gold pieces for each monster killed, with thanks from the local populace.

The Old Dogs:
Sir Olwyn of Farthingale (yeah I know ;-)  achieved his main goal of freeing Farthingale of Wights and became it's lord. He also gained one Bodypoint.

Sir Skyrithm (for your information: the names were made up by the kids not me!) found a necklace which would have protected him from any magic used against him, but he sold it for 300 goldcoins. He also gained 1 BP.

Sir Jonas Paladin of the Order of the Lion was promoted to Commander in his order, for giving them the necklace he bought off Skyrithm. and also got an extra Bodypoint.

Baroness Blackwood was able to protect a lockingstone to a portal to the Warp and thus prevent a major Chaos incursion. Therefore she gained 1 Mindpoint, handy for all future spells.

The Young Hounds:
Dame Glacia of Clan Redwinter found a Dagger of Frost which functions as a Wand of Recall (i.e. you can use two spells each turn instead of 1)

Icicles, Guardian of the Power of Ice was able to acquire an henchmen for free.

Erofillios of the Rangers (again: I know!) gained a mind point but was also possessed by a Chaos Deamon which will manifest itself if, at the start of each following Quest he will roll a 1 on a D6.

Sir Hadrian rooted out the Chaos coven that had desecrated the Temple of Taal in Ardglass village. He then spent a turn in prayer before the altar and gained, yup you've guessed it, another BP.

Surprisingly both Glacia, Icicles and Erofillios turned to the Dark Side and became followers of the Dark Gods. This will make future Quests rather interesting...

These games at the school club really made for a highlight in the work-week as you can imagine. The kids all are so funny and really get into the thick of things without the whining that is so common in modern day youth.

So that's it for now, but I do hope that from this you have gleamed a bit of why I like this game so much. Although after so many weeks of DM-ing I would like to get some time in as a player as well ;-)

Work In Progress...

Hoi,

Just a fast post to let you guys know what's going on and what's on the Workbench. For everyone not interested in my Hero Quest and GIJoe shenanigans, rest assured some Historical works are being prepared as well. These include a Napoleonic 1:72 vignette, some more Indian Mutiny and Norsemen (Viking) miniatures and a big effort to get some work done on a big Historical project during the AHPC coming up this winter.

As I am rambling anyway, two matters I'd like to put forward here.
1) I noticed a drop of two followers on the blog, nicely compensated by the joining of two new ones: welcome Brummie and Paul! Is this due to Blogger and Photobucket playing up? Or is it due to the content of my blog? I don't mind people un-following, but would like to know why.

2) Lately I enlisted in quite a few FB groups, mostly closed ones, and in one of them I stumbled into a quasi serious discussion with a gentleman about the usage of the words "figures" and "miniatures" a.k.a. "mini's". He was quite adamant we should be using the word "figures", the reason for it as far as I could discern was tradition.
At the moment I did not have a backed-up opinion but have put some thought towards it and
- I now think thus: to me a "figure" (derived from the French Figurine) is a showcase figure, mostly of larger scale, mainly for contests and glass cabinets to be admired by all, not just as hobbyists. I am unable to produce these up to a standard I'd actually like to show them to the public at large.
- Miniatures are, imho, the figures we use to game with. In grosso modo, these are less well painted then the showcase figure and as such miniatures of the units we want them to represent. You could say to me figures are more like art, while miniatures are more like a tool or so. And yes, that's grossly unfair to both of the sorts of figure and to the people who are capable of elevating miniatures to art. Oh and see what I did there? I used both terms for the same thing: this discussion is SILLY!

Anyway, this week has been filled with knocking down the old garden sheds and getting rid of the debris they generated and some social stuff, but I did get the opportunity to prep some figures for painting.  I have done up a unit of GB plastic Vikings, some more IM figures and also some miniatures for HQ. The fun part of the Hero Quest project (or HQ for short)  is that it let's you go back to your old collection and re-use figures that have lain in a drawer for ages, unused and unwanted. I also obtained some great old figures I always liked but never had a use for some of these are pictured below for your perusal.

The first trio are some of my own collection's Pizarro's Lost Legion WFB Dogs of War. I sold some of them off a while ago and found these in a drawer and have decided to use them as mercenaries/ henchmen for my HQ heroes to hire.

Some Pink/ Blue horrors of the Warp, I have always liked the old-skool look and the fluff behind them and now will paint one of both colours for special scenario uses.

I want to change Kellar's Keep to an all-Orc quest and thus needed some Orc or Goblin stuff to replace the more vanilla HQ baddies. This Gobbo shaman and Squig Hopper are just the thing to spice things up.

My old Aenarion and some new Hasslefree miniatures are next. The Elf will be used as a Dark Elf character and the two ladies as female stand-ins for the Heroes. The Barbarian and Sorceress.

These heroes are the Zealot Miniatures renditions of the classic HQ, I like them.

The next trio is for the baddies again. An evil Chaos Sorcerer that can stand in for all the ones mentioned in the regular Quests (I hate it when the rules state: use the Chaos sorcerer for this role). And some of the Dark Elf female characters I intend to use to customize the Elf's Quest.

I have managed to obtain some of the Warhammer Quest extension pack figures, to whit: the Chaos Warrior (seen below), the Elf Ranger in the last picture, some of the Witch elves, the Imperial Noble and Elf Wardancer. I am happy with these because not only are they lovely figures, they are also great to enhance the HQ experience.  The picture below also shows Krell, the Undead Chaos warrior, which I also wanted for some time, but since I never played an Undead army had no use for. Now he will be leading my undead HQ legions for the Witchking.

Another character that I have wanted for a looooong time, ever since reading Gotrek and Felix novels really, is Grey Seer Thanquol. I finally managed to scrounge him from ebay along with some other Skaven specialists to spice up the custom Skaven quest I found on the net.

Last is the Elven WHQ Ranger and a Chaos Flesh-hound. The latter is needed wioth some beastmen (I will try to get those at Crisis) for a custom Beastmen Quest I found. See, you get to buy and paint all kinds of stuff you never had a use for and now can check whether you "can do them". It's kinda therapeutic I can tell you.

A last remark concerning these is about the bases. It will have been noticed by some of you that there are some figures based on the new Renedra Frostgrave bases and these are mostly my HQ troops/ footsoldiers or generic figures, the characters and figures that have a real HQ connection are based on Zealot HQ bases.

In some time I will reveal more of my plans for the AHPC but the first major happening hobby-wise will be the Crisis Convention in Antwerp in two weeks. The boy and me will go there and hopefully meet up with some of you there!

Hero Quest Part VI

Hoi,

Some more baddies today! I love painting up the Hero Quest figures because even though they are very simple in detail they have loads of character. Continuing with the figures from the core set here are the Orcs and Fimir all done up.

Now a lot of characters need to be done...

Hero Quest Part V

Hoi,

Meet Skulkar the evil sorcerer included in the starter box. He really reminds me of Skeletor from the he-Man/ Masters of the Universe franchise.

I really like him and the way I painted him is to represent Skeletor. Now I have also bought 2 of GW's Empire Battlewizard boxes because the boy likes to play a Fire/ Bright wizard and I want to create some more wizards as  special scenario characters. Next up is a re-basing of the Gargoyle. When I got it, the sword had broken as well as one of the wings. I re-attached them and cleaned up the seems. I also rebased it since I thought this base looked more impressive.

As you can plainly see, the Gargoyle is still only based not painted yet. This is mainly due to the fact that I do not know what scheme to choose. Some more research is clearly what's needed.

Hero Quest Part IV

Hoi,

Today I have some more of the bad guys to show you. The skeletons and goblins shown here are the lesser of the evil troops. In game, they are really easy to get rid of but they can also be lucky and that means Heroes in trouble. Mostly they come in great numbers so I will be looking out for some old skool GW plastic skellies in the future.

One of each of these species has a Renedra base, I used these to try out whether it looked better than the original bases. The verdict: they don't

Hero Quest Part III

Hoi,

Some scenery for you all to look at today. I have tried to get some paint on the HQ weaponrack from the box, I painted a gate from the Warhammer Quest box game that I got in my Starter box and the tomb which I remodelled to have a Renedra plastic side instead of paper.

Some more baddies are awaiting me now.

Hero Quest Part II

Hoi,

Now on to some more Hero Quest figures, I have finished some of the meanies. While not the very best figures detail-wise they have a charm entirely unto themselves. Let's start this one with some of the Undead. In the core set are included some Fimir, Orcs (I still have to paint them), goblins, zombies, mummies and skeletons as the footsoldiers of the Evil Overlord Morcar, represented by his minion Skulkar (the wizard in the box) and the Gargoyle looking quite a bit like a Bloodthirster or even a Balrog.

Oh well so here are my two mummies.

Followed by the box's two zombies.

Next will be the skeletons and some of the greenskins. The internet has quite a lot of downright brilliant websites, I must do a post on them soon!

Hero Quest Part I

Hoi,

OK, so after me moaning along for an hour or so last post, I think it's time to put the paint on the metal or plastic.

So first up are the booklets I managed to scrounge from the interwebs. I have a Hero Quest starter box and both the "Kellar's Keep" and "Return of the Witchlord" expansions, all in Dutch. They are mostly complete but no important parts are missing.

In the meantime I have also ordered a box of "Advanced Hero Quest" (without the miniatures), an Ebay lot containing most of the AHQ miniatures and a small lot of 4 old Warhammer figures to use as heroes.

Yeah I am in this bigtime...

From the get go I started painting up the mini's of the core game and here are the first of them in the form of the heroes.

The Barbarian had his sword broken with the blade missing. So I put on a new blade and coated him, but he's not yet finished.

For a time I have played with the idea of replacing the bases for the new Renedra Frostgrave stone bases but after some trials with a Skellie and Goblin I do think I will keep the original figures on their bases and put all new figures that I will use for HQ on the Renedra bases.

Now on to more painting of figures and scenery, cheerio!
